Fall 2009 Fashion Trends for Teens

Back to School Must Haves

Jul 1, 2009 Kerrie Troseth

High school students want to start the school year off with the newest trends and fashion. This fall's inspiration comes from the '80s.

Fashion mimics current culture and trends. This year’s back to school fashion is influenced by the early '80s. In the early '80s the United States economy was coming out of a recession. People where still a bit leery about spending money, so fashion trends revolved around staple pieces that could be paired with multiple pieces. Punk rock and heavy music metal also started to crop up leaving disco and fluffy pop rock behind. These elements are influencing fall 2009 fashion.

Clothing Trends for Fall 2009

The fall 2009 fashion forecast is black, metallics, grays, and darker reds, blues, tweed and leather. All of these colors and textures can be combined with one another to form multiple outfits. Today’s economy limits buyers spending, so pieces that can be used with other multiple garments are best bets. An example is black jeans with a silver metallic T-shirt. The jeans can also be dressed up with red top and metallic accessories.

Layering is going to be another big trend in the fall. Teens can dress in layers during the school day to accommodate the change in school temperature. They can also mix up the outfit a bit to dressing for a football game, meeting up with friends, or even going to a party. A must-have for both girls and guys is a light jacket cropped for girls and regular length for the guys.

Jeans, Skirts and Accessories for Fall 2009

Jeans are still going to be a staple in teen closets for the fall. Baggy pants are out and skinny jeans or tighter fitting jeans are in for both girls and guys. Skirts and dress hemlines will primarily be mid-thigh, which means goodbye to the micro-mini skirt. Bright colors are gone; however, bright mustard yellow seems to be the accent color for outfits: belts/sashes, coats, and headbands.

Shoes for Teens in Fall 2009

One of the hottest shoe trends in the '80s was Converse hightop shoes. Those who wore the shoes often took permanent markers to the shoes to individually decorate them. Converse Shoe Company has brought this concept into the virtual arena. On Converse’s website buyers can create their own individual shoe. Buyers can choose color or patterns for the outside body, inside body, heel stripe, tongue, lining, rubber sidewall, racing stripe, stitch, and laces. Additionally, some styles allow for personalization of a name or statement to be stitched on the shoe.

Hair for Teens in Fall 2009

Eighties hair can be defined in one word-BIG. In fact hair was often held straight up and hairsprayed to stay that way. While not to that extreme, fall hairstyles will turn away from the straight, long look to a more tussled, messy, more volume look.

For girls inspiration will come from past fringe cuts, asymmetrical cuts, and messy-just-got-out-of-bed look. Each of these styles will still have a hint of today’s elements but with a touch of 80’s influence. Accent hair colors like purple, blue, and red will still be popular.

For the guys the style is shorter with attitude. Hair is shorter in the back and sides and a bit longer on the crown and bangs. This style can accommodate a rocker edge by messing up the top or even slightly spiking it with gel. The style can also take on a more formal look by sweeping the longer bangs to the side. This would include the use of hair products to get a slick look.

Overall, the trends for fall fashion leans towards the early '80s. This time period was one of individuality and expression. Students, both high school and college, should be inspired by this trend and weave their own individuality into their fashion for the fall.

Staci Fergueson from the black eyed peas also known as "FERGIE" has some great new shoes, I bought the black/metallic leather high tops and they totally completed my back to school look. The 80's was ugly..it looked like they where dressed up for halloween allllll the time ya know what i mean. Lets start our own trend ..not take the 80's trend ...uhh because thats when my mom and dad we're teens. Not soo god xD but i think the fashion should be jeans a cute dressy/ classy shirt and ugg boots. With Side swept bangs and long layerd hair. Thats the trend for my school. And its more preppy then emo..not that there isnt anything wrong with emo..its just that well emo ppl look like there dressed for halloween. And TEENS are like half way to adult hood.
