Money for Students to Pay for College

Full ride scholarships allows students the opportunity to attend college without having to pay any out-of-pocket money.

Students dream of the chance at obtaining a full ride scholarship. Associated mostly with athletics or merit, full ride scholarships are provided to pay the for all tuition, room, board, books, and school supplies. These scholarships are the most difficult and competitive to receive.

The Gates Millennium Scholarship

Bill and Melinda Gates created a foundation to serve the underserved. As part of their educational commitment, the Gates established the Millennium Scholars program. This is the most competitive scholarship awards for students form disadvantaged backgrounds. Students eligible for this scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Student of color
  • Citizen of the United States
  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher
  • Advancing to a degree awarding college
  • Demonstration of leadership
  • FAFSA completion and Pell eligible
  • Educator nomination and recommendation

Zolp Scholarship

Shakespeare once penned "What's in a name?" For students whose last name is Zolp and attending Loyola College it means a full ride scholarship. The Rev. William A. Zolp started the scholarship, however, little is known why. He was not affiliated with the college in any way nor was he a member of the same denomination as Loyola. The criteria for this award is

  • Students with the last name Zolp
  • Attending Loyola College
  • Catholic faith

Tom Joyner Foundation Scholarship

Tom Joyner is a national syndicated radio talk show host. He is the first African-American person to be inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. Through his career he realized the importance of education and wanted to provide other African-American students with similar opportunities.

The Tom Joyner Scholarship is unique in that it is specifically for a student who is attending a Historically Black College and University. Known as HBCU's these colleges support African-American students in a predominantly African-American environment. The criteria for this scholarship include:

  • Current high school senior
  • United States citizen
  • Minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale with eiter a minimum SAT score of 1300 (math and English) or an ACT score of 28
  • Acceptance to an HBCU
  • Demonstration of leadership through sports, clubs, or the community

Most full ride scholarships are college specific. Students can discuss with financial aid counselors at individual colleges on available full ride scholarships.
