Scholarships for Students

Additional Places to Find Financial Aid for College

Dec 13, 2009 Kerrie Troseth

Scholarship money is available for students willing to do research.

Smart students not only do academic homework, but they also do scholarship homework. While many students only rely on internet scholarship search engines or FAFSA results, smart students know where to find scholarships in other locations.

Scholarships Listed at the Local High School

In order to get their scholarship information to many students, companies and organizations rely on high schools to distribute information to students. This information is given to school counselors and/or career and college resource centers. School personnel will gather these scholarship opportunities and create a master list. Some schools will provide the information on paper form or online on the school's website.

Scholarships Listed at Other High Schools

Virtually every high school receives information on scholarship opportunities. Looking at other school's websites for scholarship information will expose students to additional opportunities. Students can benefit from looking at sites from other high schools in other states. Larger high schools usually have extensive scholarship resource lists. Also, private high schools tend to have a more complete listing of scholarships than most high schools.

Dollars for Scholars

Dollars for Scholars is an organization set up within local communities. The businesses, schools, and organizations donate money to the local chapter, which is then distributed to local senior students. The chapter divides the money to all interested seniors. Usually the only requirement to receive information is to fill out an application.

Scholarships Sponsored by Employers

Many companies and unions have scholarships available to employees or dependents of employees. Most of the time these scholarships are renewable annually. Students can contact the Human Resource Department of companies/businesses or union headquarters for scholarship information.

Some example businesses and unions that offer scholarships include:

  • American Federation of Teachers
  • National Farmers Union
  • Boeing Company
  • Horace Mann Insurance
  • Seagate

Additionally, many credit unions offer scholarships to members and their dependents.

Offices of Higher Education

Every state has an office of higher education. This department promotes college opportunities available for in-state residents. At times special scholarships are created to assist students within a certain criteria. For example, the Minnesota Office of Higher Education offers both the Achieve Scholarship and Minnesota State Grants to Minnesota students. A simple internet search for the state department's website may bring a few hundred to a thousand dollars to apply towards college tuition.

College scholarships are available by the millions. Some are advertised openly while others need to be researched. Either way students who are interested in obtaining free money for college need to spend time investigating possibilities.
