The average high school senior fills out six college applications. Since most of the application require the same information, a college admission resume is useful.

Resumes are typically used to display background and skills to obtain employment; however, they can also be used in the college application process. Students can organize aspects of their background specifically towards college admission. This process of creating a college admission essay can be a great time saver for busy students.

The college admission resume needs to include specific information. While students can add elements to their resume, the resume needs to contain the following information: educational background, extracurricular activities, volunteer experiences, and skills and talents.

Educational Background

Within this section students need to highlight not only their high school, but also the type of awards received and rigor of academics. Many colleges may not recognize the names of seventy-five percent of high schools in the United States, so accomplishments of the school should be highlighted. An example includes “voted top school by Redbook magazine.”

This section also needs to include the type of rigor provided by the school. Highlighting the number of honors, accelerated and Advanced Placement classes offered at the school is beneficial information for colleges. Additionally, the student should list their grade point average and number of advanced classes taken at the high school. Be sure to list any academic awards obtained in this area.

Extracurricular Activities

Participation in extracurricular activities shows colleges that the student is a participating member of the high school community. Colleges want students to continue to participate in extracurricular activities at their venue. Starting with the ninth grade year, list all of the activities with dates of participation, awards and recognition, and advisor/coaches names and contact information.

Volunteer Experiences

By participating in volunteer activities, students can show their commitment to bettering their community. Again, colleges want students to transfer this commitment to the college arena. List the volunteer activities, dates of service/hours of participation, volunteer coordinator’s name and phone number, and a short description or reflections of the experience.

Skills and Talents

Nothing separates one college applicant from another than the individual skills and talents of a student. Colleges want to bring students of diverse backgrounds and talents to the college community, so this section is very important. Be sure to list skills like fluency in a world language, CPR certification, or managerial experience on the resume. Talents can also be added to this section: accomplished pianist, duck hunter, or Junior Miss North Dakota.

The college application process should be treated like applying for a job. Students need to construct a resume tailored to their life as a student. It should be a snapshot, so no longer than one page. The college admission resume can then be used as a reference for filling out college applications and/or as a presentation tool during the college interview. Having a resume prepared shows organization and professionalism.
